Ham Sauce (Mother's Secret)

My Mother always called this her “Secret Sauce”. In fact, she told me she had found it in Good Housekeeping Magazine in the 1930's, and it became a secret when other ladies proclaimed their own secrets they would not share. I am certain she will have no objection to your using it.

The great thing about this sauce is how easy it is. Just don’t overcook it, or it becomes like candy.

1 6-8 ounce jar of crabapple jelly (apple jelly will do, if you can’t find the real thing)

1 tbsp ground cinnamon

1 tsp ground cloves

¼ tsp dry mustard

¼ cup cider vinegar

  1. Combine ingredients in a sauce pan.
  2. Bring to a boil, stirring frequently.
  3. Allow to boil for a few minutes until the spices are absorbed in the jelly and the flavors have combined. DO NOT OVERCOOK.
  4. As soon as the sauce is ready, serve in a gravy boat or other bowl.
